Connellan Airways: Auster J/1B Aiglet VH-KAU

A young Ian Leslie swings the propeller of Connellan Airways Auster J/1B Aiglet VH-KAU at Delmore Downs Station, north-north-east of Alice Springs, in May 1955. The colour scheme is Royal blue fuselage and empennage, with silver wings.

This machine (c/n 2670) was first registered VH-KAU to Kingsford Smith Aviation Service, the Australian Auster agents, on 4 April 1951. It was purchased by Connellan Airways and re-registered to them on 13 June, their first new aircraft. It was ferried from Sydney/Mascot to Alice Springs by Ian Leslie.

The aircraft crashed to the north of Alice Springs in 1957 but was rebuilt. The aircraft was sold and later struck off the Register on 22 September 1959. The photo above shows VH-KAU whilst in service with Connellan Airways.
