Essendon Control Tower - 1963
PNS PhoneAnsett-ANA DC3 VH-ANPAnsett-ANA Viscount V.720 VH-TVF

A superb and rare colour shot of Kelvin (K.D.) Klauber at the Aerodrome Controller (ADC) position in Melbourne's Essendon Tower
in 1963. He is holding a "PNS 'phone" (say it quickly and look at the shape and you'll understand). These odd-looking pieces of equipment were locally designed and surprisingly ergonomic.

The Terminal building in the background has changed little over the years, however the apron is no longer home to the Electras, Viscounts, Fokker 27s and DC3s of Ansett-ANA and TAA as seen in this photo. Aircraft which can be identified on the original print are DC3 VH-ANP in the foreground, which was an ex-Guinea Airways aircraft and served with Ansett-ANA from February 1960 to June 1967, and the Viscount V.720 behind which is VH-TVF and was on lease from TAA under the 'Two Airline Policy' between March 1960 and April 1967.
