Mobile Control Tower - 2005

Every two years since 1995 Airservices Australia has operated a Mobile Control Tower at Avalon East (YAVE), a grass airstrip established just to the east of the main Avalon Airport as a reliever strip for aircraft visiting the Australian International Airshow.

In previous years the old Vic/Tas Region Mobile Tower was used but, following repeated complaints from staff about the adequacy of the accomodation and equipment, in 2005 the more modern Adelaide-based Mobile Control Tower was used. This Tower, which is air conditioned and elevates on a scissor-lift, was towed over from Adelaide in early 2005 for fitting out. The photo below shows it parked in the compound at Melbourne Airport in February with the Melbourne Control Tower in the background.

The photo above shows the Tower in situ at Avalon East in March just prior to opening, with the main Avalon Tower in the background. Note the anemometer on the roof which supplies data to instruments in the cab.
