This
superb photo actually shows the first two Control Towers at Essendon. The first
was the glass box protruding through the roof of what was the Aero Club building.
The second, adjacent, Tower was constructed in 1946 and is typical of its era.
At the time this photo was taken, the old Aero Club building was in use as the
International Terminal!

the informal fencing delineating 'airside' in those uncomplicated days.
